Ground Source

Ground source heating is also a great option if a borehole is feasible or if there is land available for a horizontal collector. Ireland is very well suited to ground source heating as the soil temperature 1m below the surface is on average above 7°C meaning the heat pump can run efficiently. Due to this high and constant soil temperature there is always a reliable and stable heat source available for the heat pump throughout the year even in the depths of winter.

Ground source has the advantage in Winter time when air-source heat pumps tend to have to defrost their evaporators during operation. However, air source heat pumps can provide greater output and efficiencies at higher ambient temperatures during warmer periods of the year.
