    Ground Source Heat Pumps

    Using heat from the ground

A renewable form of energy, ground source heat pumps use the ground as their main energy source. They do this by utilising geothermal collectors or geothermal probes that are buried in your garden.

Ground source heat pump systems take heat energy from the ground and pass it through a heat exchanger into a heat pump, which works like a refrigerator but in reverse. Water heat pumps can also be used where water is available as a heat source.

These solutions provide heating and hot water for your home. Combined geothermal heating and cooling systems are also now available. As well as providing warmth during colder weather, these solutions work in reverse when it’s hot outside and provide cool air to help keep your home at a comfortable temperature year-round.

Ground source heating and cooling systems are becoming increasingly popular as people look for more environmentally friendly energy solutions for their homes. By harnessing natural, renewable resources, ground heat pumps and cooling systems can help you to cut your carbon footprint and bring your energy bills down. To further this, you could choose a setup that runs the heat pump using power generated on site by renewable power sources such as photovoltaic solar panels.

    Heat Pump Retrofit Grant

Retrofit – As of April 2018 the SEAI have made available a grant of €3500 for a heat pump retrofit on any home built before 2011 provided it is considered “heat pump ready”. This will be dependent on the heat loss factor of the house which can be calculated by an SEAI technical advisor. When replacing existing boilers with a heat pump the size of the heat emitters must be carefully considered. Due to the lower temperatures heat pumps operate at some emitter sizes may need to be increased. Where possible UFH could be a retrofit option with products such as our LK EPS16 Insulated Slotted Board.

    Who can apply

All homeowners, including landlords, whose homes were built and occupied before 2011 can apply. This is defined as the date your electricity meter was installed. Note that this is different to other grant measures where the home must be built before 2006.

    How to apply

    1. Find out more about how you can apply for a home energy grant
    2. Ready to apply? Start your application online

    Timeframe

You must complete the works and submit the paperwork within 8 months from the date of the grant offer. You can find the expiry date in your offer letter.

    Free upgrades for eligible homes

If your home was built and occupied before 2006 and you are in receipt of social welfare payments, you may be eligible for free energy efficiency improvements.

Should you wish to discuss your options for a Viessmann Heat Pump System for a new-build or existing home, feel free to give us a call on
