R290 Heat Pump Installation

The very first installation in Ireland of the Viessmann’s Vitocal 150-A R290 heat pump by BK heat pumps capable of 70 Deg flow temperatures.

This project marks a significant milestone as the very first installation in Ireland of the Viessmann Vitocal 150-A R290 propane air source heat pump, installed by BK Heat Pumps. Designed to deliver high performance in both new builds and retrofit applications, the system is capable of achieving flow temperatures of up to 70°C, making it a future-proof solution for homes traditionally reliant on fossil-fuel heating systems.

To ensure optimal efficiency at lower operating temperatures, 22 existing radiators were replaced with TEMPLO aluminium radiators, carefully sized to meet each room’s calculated heat loss. The system was designed to operate at a 45°C flow temperature at an external design temperature of –3°C, delivering excellent comfort while maximising seasonal efficiency and reducing running costs.

The installation also showcases Viessmann’s latest user interface and control technology. The system features a 7” high-definition touchscreen with comprehensive energy monitoring, a digital pressure gauge, and integrated internet connectivity, enabling seamless connection to ViCare. This allows homeowners to monitor performance, adjust settings remotely, and gain real-time insight into energy consumption—particularly valuable in modern, energy-efficient new builds.

Inside, the Vitocal 150-A indoor unit incorporates a factory-integrated pressure vessel and defrost buffer, significantly simplifying installation and reducing external components. A range of intelligent hydraulic features are built in, including a dynamic bypass valve to guarantee correct flow rates at all times, a flow sensor, and multiple smart safety and optimisation controls. These features ensure stable operation, protect system components, and contribute to long-term reliability and efficiency.

From a sustainability and cost perspective, the homeowner was able to avail of a **€6,500 grant through the SEAI****, substantially reducing the upfront investment. Combined with the use of R290 natural refrigerant, which has an ultra-low global warming potential, this installation demonstrates how high-temperature heat pumps can deliver both environmental benefits and practical, real-world performance in Irish homes.

Overall, this project highlights how the Viessmann Vitocal 150-A R290 Air Source Heat Pump sets a new benchmark for high-efficiency, low-carbon heating solutions in Ireland—proving that renewable heat can comfortably replace traditional systems without compromise.
